Motomags first hit the BMX scene in
1973 with the Motomag I which was sand casted with Magnesium and that's where the name Mag comes from.
The originalMotomag I had a machined sidewall/braking
surface and the spokes had a rough, texture to them from the sand casting.
The finish of the Motomag I could be painted to match your bike
and when you were tired of that color all you had to do was have the rim
sand blasted to bring it back to it's original finish. Most
Motomag's had a coaster brake but if you knew how to do it, you
could "Freewheel" it.
Motomag II's
Both the I's and II's were made
by BMX Products INC. which is the same company that was responsible for Mongoose BMX bikes.
The Motomag II's were made out of aluminum
and the finish on them was smooth so they looked really good with a nice polish on them.
Motomag II's came out around 1975-76 and were produced up until around 1980.
Pictured to the right is a Motomag II that I found with yellow
paint on it, all I had to do to return it to it's original finish
was to use Jasco to remove the paint and some Simichrome brand polish to
get the shine back. My set of Motomag II's with a Bendex
coaster hub weighs in at a whopping 12 pounds!
