Hey Eric, remember putting
your foot between the front wheel and fork to pull an Endo? The sport sure has come
a long way since then! "Yes, I do remember putting my foot in
the front wheel to produce an endo. I remember how it wasn't very long after that I
got some front brakes. I think that type of endo actually help me with learning how
to do the Switzerland Squeaker, which I picked up in a Freestylin'
magazine. R.L. Osbourne was the featured rider performing it.
Picture on the left is Mike Dominguez on his signature Diamond Back "540 Air". It was taken at a competition in
Machester Armory, Manchester, NH. USA circa 1985. It was an AFA comp (predecessor to the
AFL I think). I remember he got some of the biggest airs at this event. He was always good
for the 10 to 15 foot range. I don't remember much in the way of any outrageous variations
(double can-cans, etc.) but he could definitely get some serious airs. At some
points, it appeared as though he was just a matter of a mere ten feet from the rafters of
that place. It seemed no one could touch him. |
I also remember that he was King
Of The Skateparks too. That was even more interesting since I believe some of the
bowls were about 10 feet deep, leaving him some twenty feet above bottom!
I can still hear the noise at this event. He would leave the longest times between the
sound of his bike pounding the ramp upward and slamming the plywood decking downward as he
returned to earth. He actually kept landing a little too far down the ramp in the
beginning but later pulled it together. He also took a major bail doing a ramp to ramp
maneuver. He got a little too much air and overshot it, dumping the bike on the way down.
He was up and going again moments later.
If I remember right, of all the pros of that time he always appeared the most mysterious
to me. I never heard much from him in the form of interviews, videos, etc. Around the time
I started to end my freestyling "career" I remember he had a bit of a falling
out with Hutch also.
I wonder what became of that?" |
Thanks to Eric for this Old
School photo and the above info. |
